INTRA CLASS QUIZ COMPETITION

 
   

 The department of Sociology conducted Inctra-Class quiz competition for Final Year B.A Sociology students on 24th March, 2009. The quiz competition was held on the current Sociology syllabus for the VI semester on both papers. There were four rounds, namely, Biographical round, Bibliographical Round, Visual Round and Subject Round, each with 15 questions with total 60 questions. Wilma and Group secured I place, Manohari and Group secured II place and Mamata and Group secured III place. Principal Rev. Fr. Fred Mascarenhas distributed the prizes and certificates to the prize winners. Prof. Melwin C Rego, H.O.D, Sociology conducted the quiz competition.

     
BA Degree Students Educational Tour to Kundapur on 19th March, 2009
 
All the B.A degree students accompanied by their teachers, Prof. Hilda Rodgrigues, Dr. Nery Cornelio, Prof. Melwin Rego and Mrs Florin DSilva visited Namma Bhoomi, an N.G.O, Womens Police Station, Kundapur and Rebello Farm at Maravanthe.
Students and teachers had an interaction with the Police Sub-Inspector, Mrs. Meenakshi. She gave the information about the crime forms committed against women, crimes committed by women and precautions to be taken by the young girls of today. She encouraged the students to join the police force and serve the community.
Rtd. Prof. Richard Rebello took the students around the farm and highlighted the innovatibve techniques adopted by him in agriculture. He called upon the young ones to take up agriculture and assist in rural development.
Visit to the NGO Namma Bhoomi was fruitful. The Director of Namma Bhoomi, Mr.                  Shetty briefed the students about the objectives and programmes of Namma Bhoomi
     
B Sc students Interacted with Dept of Nuclear Medicine and  science centre( Centre for Atomic and Molecular Physics Manipal University) on 13\3\08 under the guidance of staff members. They also visited planetarium.
 
 
     
Field study by Final B Sc students
 
Final B Sc Students interacted with Department of Nuclear Medicine, Department of Radiotherapy of Manipal University. They also interacted with professors and researchers of Centre for Atomic and Molecular Physics, Manipal University.
At Department of Nuclear Physics  and Radio Therapy they have seen the applications of Radio isotopes and various Radiation detectors and monitors. 
At Centre for Atomic and molecular Physics they have seen various LASERS and their applications.
     
National Science Day
 
National Science Day celebrated by Science Association on 28\2\09 at Library Hall. Dr A P Bhat was the chief guest. He stressed the need of basic research.   Convener Prof Archana and H O D of Physics Dr Gerald Pinto were present. Prof. Hilda Rodrigues presided.
     
Training for new staff   Extension lecture in Physics
 
IQAC organised training for new staff on 31\1\09 in the Library Hall. Prof Vincent Alva gave training on Communication skills.  Dr Gerald Pinto explained how to prepare lessons and how to write diary and arrange the coaching for slow learners. principal presided.   Extension lecture in Physics was arranged on 28\2\09. Prof. Ananthpadmanab Bhat of PPC Udupi was the chief guest. He spoke on Raman Effect and need for basic science research.
     
Participation of NSS in Antiterrorism rally
 
About 150  NSS students under the guidance of programme offficers participated in anti terrorosm rally organised by department of higher education on 14\2\09 at Manipal. Some of them helped as volunteers.
     
Very Rev. Fr. Da'Cruz memorial science lecture competition
 
Very. Rev. Fr. Da'Cruz memorial memorial Science Lecture Competition was conducted on 18th December 2008.Alva's College Moodabidri bagged the rolling Shield. Prof. Chandrashekhar Hebbar, Principal Dr. A. V. Baliga Institute of Social work and Rural Management was the Chief Guest and our Principal Rev. Fr. Fred Mascarenhas presided over the function.
     
TEACHERS DAY
 
Teachers Day was celebrated on 5th September 2008. All the teaching and non-teaching staff were felicitated on this occasion. Many games were conducted for teachers and prizes were distributed. Some students expressed their reverence towards their teachers on behalf of all the student community.
     
Medical aid to Mr. Jeevan
The students of our college generously contributed to provide medical aid to Mr. Jeevan of I P.U Commerce to meet the expenses incurred towards his kidney operation. A total sum of Rs.40,812=00 was handed over to his mother on 15th October 2008.
     
Student Quality Circle inauguration
 
Student Quality circle inaugurated in the College on 17.02.09 by the principal. IQAC convener Dr Gerald Pinto was present. Prof. Vincnet Alva gave training on leadership. The student members were told to help to improve quality of Teaching, discipline, and to give proper feed back.
     
GUEST LECTURE & DEMONSTRATION ON T.V LIVE AND OUTDOOR ANCHORING
 

Prof. Melwin C Rego, the Convener of Credit Based Certificate Course in Mass Communication and Journalism organized a practical demonstration session on T.V Live and Outdoor Anchoring on the 5th of March, 2005. Mr. Alwyin Danthi, Anchor, Namma T.V, Mangalore conducted the demonstration. He addressed the students on the different facets of T.V Anchoring and Challenges faced during the live shows. He said that it is not the physical appearance is that is important, but the ability to communicate and wit is playing the lead role. He informed that TV anchors should possess presence of mind, in depth knowledge in the event, be aware of current affairs, self-confidence and good voice and should give up personal mannerisms. He gave lot of examples from his own experience. He demonstrated the live anchoring and showed videos on the theme.  Prof. Melwin C Rego, welcomed and proposed vote of thanks. The programme was very much appreciated by the students and participants.

     

Milagreans Kallianpur, Dubai – Handover the Trophy

 
 

It was a moment of great joy in Milagres College, Kallianpur on 21st February 2009, when Mr. Melwyn Francis Lewis, an alumnus , handed over the runner up trophy to Rev. Fr  Fred Mascarenhas, which was won by Milagreans ‘A’ team in the Volley Ball Tournament held in Dubai, recently.

Milagreans Kallianpur , Dubai, U.A.E had organized a volley ball and throw ball tournament in Dubai on 13th February, 2009 in aid of the New Building of Milagres College, Kallianpur.

Along with the sparkling trophy, Mr. Melwyn F. Lewis, one of the main organizers of the tournament, handed over a donation of Rs. Two Lakhs towards the New Building Fund. He expressed his deep respect towards his Alma Mater.

Rev. Fr. Fred Mascarenhas receiving the trophy and donation expressed his sincere thanks to Mr. Melwyn F. Lewis and all the Molagreans and well wishers for their philontrophic gesture towards the college. The Milagreans, Dubai on this occasion also donated money towards Milagres High School Building. Fr. Vijay Lobo, Head Master,Milagres English Medium High School, Mr Sadashiva Alse, P. U Principal, Augustine A. Dias, Physical Director, Vikram Devadiga, President, Students Welfare council, Staff Members and students were present on this occasion.

     
Dr. P Gururaj Bhat Memorial Endowment Lecture on 'Sociological Approaches to the Study of History'.
 
The department of Sociology, Milagres College, Kallianpur organized Dr. P. Gururaj Bhat Memorial Endowment Lecture on 17th of February, 2009. Prof. Sripathy Tantri, an academician and the Rtd. Principal, Vijaya College, Mulky, delivered the endowment lecture. Initially, Prof. Tantri recalled his association with Dr. P Gururaj Bhat and admired him for his contributions to the History of Tulunadu. Prof Tantri brought out the intellectualilty of Dr. P. Gururaj Bhat and said that Dr. P. Gururaj Bhat had given a Sociological touch to history in his writings. He told Sociologists to look for sociological information from such great historical works.

Dr. Vinay Rajath, Lecturer in Sociology welcomed the gathering, Ms Sara, III B.A compered the Programme, Prof. Melwin C Rego, H.O.D Sociology, Convened the programme. Dr. P Gururaj Bhat Memorial Endowment Lecture was instituted by Prof. G.S.Ramachandra, Rtd. Professor of History of Milagres College, Kallianpur.

Prof. Govinda Bhat, Pompei College, Aikala addressed the students on “Techniques of Effective Speaking”,  on 29th July 2008. There was an interaction with the budding speakers.

OUTREACH PROGRAMME BY DEPARTMENT OF SOCIOLOGY
 
A novel outreach programme was organized by the Dept. of Sociology, Milagres College Kallianpur on 13th of February in the College Campus. An exhibition cum sale of hand made products by the inmates of  'SPANDANA' a Special School, Nejar was held in the college campus to mobilze funds for the School. Prof. Melwin Rego, H.O.D of the Department of Sociology stated the importance of the programme that is to give a wide publicity about the Special School and their activities to the students and the people of the locality. He also stressed the aim to popularize the products produced by the school and encourage philanthropic persons to buy them to aid the school. The products exhibited and sold included artistically hand made greeting cards, wall hangins, wax candles, flower pots and bouquets, table mats, phenyl, drawings and paintings, school teaching aids etc. The exhibition attracted huge crowd of students and products worth about Rs.667 were sold on this occasion. The purchasers were happy about the products and appreciated the Special School Inmates for thier artistic talents.
     

Outreach Programme

 
An outreach programme was conducted by the Department of Sociology at the mentally differentially able institute 'Spandana' Nejar, Udupi District on 7th February, 2009. Nearly 35 students from different degree classes participated in the programme. The programme included an entertainment for an hour for the inmates and variety of games were conducted. The winners were distributed by the students themselves. the utility items were distributed as prizes worth about rs 700.  Mr. Janardhan N., Principal of the Institute addressed the students on the problems of the differentially able people and gave information on the causes of the disease.  The students also visited the crafts room of the institute where items produced by the inmates were exhibited and sold.

Human Resource Development for B.A Students   Career Guidance
 
A Days HRD programme was held fro the students of I and II B.A which included leadership training, personality development, memory skills, task management and self-motivation. A formal programme was presided over by the Principal, Rev. Fr. Fred Mascarenhas. He stressed the need for the development of personality for the future development and career enhancement of the students  
Book Exhibition on Career Guidance: Book Exhibition  on competitive exams was arranged for the students was arranged on 24\1\09  in the Library.  269 books of various competitive exams were exhibited.

UGC sponsored Two Days State Level Seminar inaugurated by Dr. A. Sampath Kumar, Prof. Mysore University on 1st August 2008   Valedictory Address was given by Dr. H. B. Walikar, Prof. Dharwad University on 2nd August 2008

The Inaugural function of the two days seminar was held on  01-08-08 at 9:30 am in the Silver Jubilee Hall, Milagres college. Prof. Ganesh Bhat , convener , welcomed the dignitaries and the participants. The inaugural address by Dr. Parameshwara Bhat, Prof., Dept. of Mathematics, Mangalore University. He emphasized on the applications of Graph Theory in all subjects and he addressed the gathering. Presiding over the function, Rev. Fr. Fred Mascarenhas, Principal of Milagres College, focused on the need for studying and its role in developing Science and Technology. He also gave a call to undertake research oriented activities in Mathematics.                        Mrs. Reena Fernandes, Department of Mathematics proposed vote of thanks. A total of 47 teachers in Mathematics 23 from the Engineering colleges and 24 from academic colleges participated in the seminar.

 The valedictory function was held at 3.30pm on 02-08-08. Dr. H.B.Walikar, Chairman, Dept of Computer  Science, Dharwad delivered the valedictory address. Speaking on the occasion Dr. S.M.Hegde and Dr. Jayaram appreciated the efforts of the college in organizing the seminar in choosing the elite group of resource persons and the whole arrangements. Rev. Fr. Fred Mascarenhas, Principal presided. At the function Dr. Sooryanarayana Rao , Prof Bangalore was the Guest of Honour. Mr. Ganesh Bhat proposed the vote of thanks.

     
TWO DAYS STATE LEVEL SEMINAR ON 'IMPACT OF GLOBALIZATION OF INDIA ON AGRICULTURE' BY DEPARTMENT OF ECONOMICS
 
 
A two days state level seminar on 'Impact of Globalization of India on Agriculture' was inaugurated at Milagres College on 24th January, 2009 by Dr. P.L. Rego, Chairman, Department of Economics, Mangalore University. He opined that the though globalization had good effects on Indian Economy, the small and medium farmers are in difficulties. Globalization had caused development in India: but the growth is restricted.

Dr. Jayaram Shetty, Director (Academics), B.S.R.N.S Educational Institutions Bangalore delivered the key note address. Dr. Jayaram Shetty is the alumni of Milagres College. He expressed that due to globalization small holders have lost their hopes, we Indians are not yet ready for globalization.

The two days seminar was concluded on the 25th. Important discussions were held on the impact of globalization on indian farmers. Dr. Y.R.Rao, H.O.D, Sociology, S.M.S College Brahmavar, gave a sociological analysis of farmers suicide in India. Prof. Richard Rebello, Rtd. Professor in Commerce, Milagres College, gave his practical experiences as a farmer. Dr.Bharath, Dept of Pol.Science, Mysore University and Dr. Basel Hans, Dept. of Economics from St. Aloysius College, Mangalore were other resource persons.

The seminar was organized by the Economics Department of Milagres college, with the convenership of Prof. Hild Rodgrgues, H.O.D and Prof. Annamma as the co-ordinator.

A two days U.G.C Sponsored State Level Seminar on 'DEVELOPMENT STRATEGIES AND INCLUSIVE POLICIES' was held on 16th and 17the January, 2009 under the auspices of Sociology Department of Milagres College and Mangalore Sociology Association.
The seminar was inaugurated by Dr. Jogan Shankar, Chairman, Dept. of Sociology, Mangalore University. Dr. Malini Mukund, President of Mangalore Sociology Association and H.O.D of Sociology, School of Social Work, Roshni Nilaya was the Guest of Honour. The seminar was organized by Prof. Melwin C Rego and Dr. Vinay Rajath DSouza. The eminent scholars of International and National repute deliberated the Sesssions.
The promiment among them were Dr. Richard Pais, H.O.D of Sociology St Aloysius College, Mangalore conducted a session on: Minorities: Challenges and Prospects. Dr. Clarence Miranda, Principal, St Marys College Shirva spoke on the 'Social Inclusions in Recent Policies-SEZ Miles away from Inclusive Growth'. Dr. Malini Mukund discussed
on 'Health Schemes and Public Participation' which gave an insight on the various health schemes available for the farmers and weaker sections of the population.The Source of Inspiration of the seminar were differently abled personalities like Prof. Calistus D'Sa, Rtd. Professor of Sociology from Mumbai and Ms Sabita Monis, II Year M.S.W Student from Alvas School of Social Work, Moodbidri. Prof. P.G. Naganuri, H.O.D Sociology from Nehru Memorial College, Sullia and Prof. M. Dattatreya, H.O.D Sociology, Sacred Hear College, Madanthyar were also the resource persons
The student delegates from various colleges were given an opportunities to present papers and Ms Swapna from Crossland College, Brahmavar, Joseph Dheeraj Dsouza from St Aloysius College, Mangalore, Sr.Renita Milagres College Kallianpur, Sabita Monis, Alvas College of Social Work, Moodbidri, Vinutha from St Aloysius College of Social Work, Milu from School of
Social Work, Roshni Nilaya, Mangalore presented papers during the Students Session.The semianar was well appreciated by the participants and the resource persons.

A Human Resource Development Programme
A Human Resource Development Programme was conducted for the students of I and II B.A of Milagres College, Kallianpur by the Humanities Association. Mr. Seetharam Kevala, Principal, Indus College, Puttur was the resource person. The programmed included the training on task management, Memory skills, self-motivation, leadership skills etc. The programme was held during the whole day which included training games, puzzles, group dynamics.

NAAC Re-accreditation workshop    July 2nd and 3rd 2008

 

 Dr Joseph Gonsalves the principal of St Joseph Engineering College inaugurated NAAC accreditation  work shop at Milagres College  Kallianpur for the Colleges of Udupi District on July 2, 2008.  Speaking on the occasion Dr Gonsalves said that accreditation process has helped to improve the quality of education in the Colleges.

Career Guidance Programme

Career Guidance programme  was arranged for the first PUC Students at Milagres College Kallianpur on 21.06.2008 in the Silver Jubilee Hall by the Catholic Sabha Kallianpur, Pudar Prastistan and Career Guidance Cell Milagres College. Principal of P.U College Prof. Sadashiva Alse inaugurated the programme. Degree College principal Fr Fred Mascarenhas adviced the student to make use of all the facilities in the college and build a strong foundation for  the future. Dr Gerald Pinto, Prof Hilda D Silva and Prof. Clara Menezes were the resource persons. Mr Felix Pinto, president catholic Sabha kallianpur varado present as chief guest.
